Home EV Charger FAQs

Direct engineering answers covering breaker amperages, hardwired vs plug-in speeds, and panel load calculations.

Level 2 EV charging requires a dedicated 240-volt single-phase branch circuit. For maximum charging speed (48A continuous charge on Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, or Rivian Wall Charger), the NEC Article 625 continuous load rule (80% max continuous current) mandates a dedicated 60-amp circuit breaker with #6 AWG copper conductors (or #4 AWG depending on wire temperature rating and run length). For standard 32A to 40A charging via a NEMA 14-50 plug, a 40A or 50A dedicated GFCI circuit is required.
